Vijaya Dashami, one of the most popular hindu festival in nepal. Hindus usually celebrate it by receiving tika, jamara (barly leaves), bless and some money package from elderly people as their wish. They feast on this very special day making day more interesting. Nowadays, it is considered to be one of the most liked festival. People will have a delightful meeting with their relatives regardless their field of activity or availability of time and hence it is taken as a bridge joining two opposite bank of river in other words, the festival of joining distant people in relationship. Many people pass their time by gambling, drinking, feasting and merry-making in general. All are well-dressed for the occasion and feasting follows the tika ceremony. It is 15 days festival and tika is not confined only to dashami as it is not possible to visit all relatives in one day. The tika ceremony can be conducted until the full moon, the last day of dashain.
Dashain is immedately followed by Tihar, popularly known as the Festival of Lights. The most striking characterstics of this festival is the lighting up houses with number of oil-wick lamps. Modernization has replaced the oil-wick lamps with numerous colored electric bulbs. But, people in village area still follow the culture of using oil-wick lamp and some use both . This is a five-day festival with the most important being “Bhai Tika” when sisters apply tika on their brothers foreheads and give blessings. Here, brothers are expected to offer his sister varieties of gifts and the sister prays for the brother’s long life and happiness in return. The other important day is “Laxmi Puja” when people pray to goddess Laxmi, the Goddess of Wealth. It is believed that on this day, the Goddess visits all the houses that have been well lightened, thats why people used to decorate their houses with colored lights. Gambling, feasting varieties of roti make up this festival to some extent. Playing Bhailo and Deusuri moving door to door by singing traditional and finely created songs is of higher enjoyment during the festival, they receive money in return and give significant bless to owner.
